On January 28-29, 2010, Dr. Scott Sandford of Code SSA served as a guest Speaker and resource person for the “So’ ba hane’ – Story of the Stars Educator Workshop” held in Window Rock, AZ. This workshop was the result of a collaborative effort supported by the NASA NAI and OSS programs and the Navajo Nation. The two day workshop was attended by over 100 Navajo Teachers, despite the fact that this part of the country was in a declared state of emergency at the time due to a series of unusually heavy snow storms.
The workshop was designed to provide the teachers with both scientific and cultural knowledge of the stars and to provide training for the use of the So’ ba Hane’ classroom materials that were developed as part of a previous collaboration between NASA and the Navajo Nation. The format of the meeting resulted in the exchange of considerable information (both cultural and scientific) between all the parties involved (attendees, presenters, administrators, etc.).
A number of other NASA personnel participated in the workshop, including personnel from GSFC and JSC. Other ARC associated personnel who participated in the workshop include the NAI’s Carl Pilcher and Wendy Dolci, and Bob Dolci. Daniella Scalice led the effort to organize the workshop and served as a CoI with Scott Sandford on the proposal/grant that paid for many of the Workshop activities.
