Sandford and Group Achievement Award for the Stardust Interstellar Preliminary Examination Team

Dr. Sandford was part of an international team of scientists that has been working for several years to find interstellar dust candidates in the Stardust interstellar aerogel collectors. This team has now discovered a handful of interstellar dust particle candidate and completed a large number of different types of laboratory analysis to demonstrate that several of the particles likely are samples of contemporary interstellar dust. These are the first particles of this type in the NASA collections. Dr. Sandford was an original Co-Investigator on the Stardust mission and also played a role in the 1990’s on designing the mission to actually collect the samples.
