McKay: Global Warming Would Be Needed To Make Mars Habitable

The New York Times (12/11, Ray, Subscription Publication, 1.68M) examines the question on whether humans could live on Mars if plants were raised to produce oxygen. “Mars expert” Chris McKay of the Ames Research Center “theorizes that engineers would first have to encourage the kind of global warming they want to avoid on Earth” in order to carry out this plan. If the temperature could be raised high enough, “only then would trees be planted to absorb carbon dioxide and produce enough oxygen for humans.”
