Haven House Family Shelter NASA Explorers’ Program

Through the support of a Space Grant Foundation of California award, Darlene Lim has began her initiative to bring STEM topics to kids ages 5-15 at the Haven House Family Shelter. This shelter houses homeless families and the children in this establishment have numerous barriers to academic success that they must overcome. STEM related programming is currently missing from the Shelter Network’s Children’s Program, and this pilot program will be a first for the organization. This Speakers’ series will include 15 different speakers from NASA ARC and academia, and span a 5 month period on a weekly basis.
The schedule of forthcoming speakers is included below, and we welcome the inclusion of further members of the Ames research community. During the next session, Darlene will be speaking to the older kids about college requirements, scholarships and associated applications, and careers in research. David Lees from Code TI will follow as a speaker, and will be leading the kids through gigapan imaging activities. Darlene hopes to expand this initiative over the years to include field trips to Ames and other notable science centers in the Bay Area.
