EPO with Hartshorne High School and the Choctaw Nation Jones Academy

On January 21, 2010 the NASA Ames NAI (NASA Astrobiology Institute) team conducted an Education and Public Outreach event with the Hartshorne High School and the Choctaw Nation Jones Academy, Hartshorne, OK. Using NASA’s Digital Learning Network (DLN), Dr. Andrew Mattioda of the Ames NAI team conducted a seminar on Astrochemistry and Astrobiology with the students from Hartshorne High School and Jones Academy. This seminar was the first in a series to demonstrate career opportunities in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas to the students. Many of the Hartshorne High Students, as well as the students from the Choctaw Nation Jones Academy, come from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the STEM field. This program hopes to correct that trend. Sandy Dueck, EPO lead for the Ames NAI team, is the organizer for the seminar program. The seminars will be hosted by Dr. Andrew Mattioda, Ames NAI team Co-Investigator, who attended Hartshorne High School and grew-up in the Choctaw Nation area of Oklahoma. Greg Pitzer coordinated the NASA DLN technical component. The seminar was recorded and will be posted on the Ames NAI team website (http://www.amesteam.arc.nasa.gov/).
