On May 22, 2013 Dr. Jeff Scargle of the Planetary Systems Branch at NASA Ames Research Center attended a tour of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory led by ex-director Persis Drell.

This is a new facility making use of the enormous power of free electron lasers to generate intense x-ray beams -- for a variety of biological, chemical, and material science applications. Since astronomy-related experiments have been carried out with this facility. The picture shows the part of the underground linear track followed by the relativistic electrons that ultimately generate the powerful x-ray beam.
