The CheMin instrument on MSL was exhibited at the 2013 Bay Area Maker Faire May 18 – 19, 2013, and received an “Editor’s Choice” award at the end of the activities. The exhibit consisted of a rapid prototype model of the flight instrument, various early prototypes developed at Ames, as well as a commercial spinoff instrument called “Terra.” Mineral analyses were conducted on the Terra instrument in real time, and the process of identifying the minerals was explained.

During the 2-days, the exhibit was represented by the CheMin PI Dave Blake (SSX), Co-I’s Mark Fonda (SS) and Philippe Sarrazin (SETI), Collaborator Tom Bristow (NPP, SSX) and Sanjay Som of Blue Marble Space. One of the interested visitors was John Grunsfeld of NASA Headquarters.
