Ames Scientists David Blake (Exobiology), Tori Hoehler (Exobiology) and Chris McKay (Planetary Systems) will be featured in an upcoming Quest episode on KQED. The episode, which has a segment called “Searching for life on Mars with NASA Ames’ rover” will air on May 4th at 7:30 PM on KQED. The segment highlights Ames involvement in NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory mission, which will be launched in November, 2011 and will rove the Mars surface for two years starting in August, 2012. Blake is the inventor and Principal Investigator of the CheMin instrument, which will make quantitative measurements of the minerals present in Mars rocks and soil. Tori Hoehler is a collaborator in that investigation. McKay is a Co-Investigator on the SAM instrument (PI, Paul Mahaffy, GSFC), which will make measurements of organic compounds and carbon and oxygen isotopes in Mars rocks and soil. Other Ames scientists involved in the MSL investigation are Dave DesMarais and Michael Wilson. Information on the MSL mission can be found here: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/.
