Interaction & Mentoring
2006-2009 With Tom Greene (Code SSA), co-mentor a GSRP student, Casey Deen, from UT Austin to support star formation and astrobiology observations on SOFIA using silicon and KRS-5 grisms in the SOFIA FORCAST instrument.
Summer 2006 Mentor of undergraduate Derek Tia (sophomore UC Berkeley) in the USRP summer program on a data archivist project in the Ames Infrared Detector Lab.
2002-2004 Mentored two CS, Joe Sacco and Pat Whittaker, during their transitions from the wind-tunnels to the Space Projects division (Code SF). Instructed them about infrared detectors and their applications to space missions such as SOFIA, JWST, and ABE. Pat Whittaker eventually joined the IR Detector Lab in Code SFT/PMF, where I continued to work with her in the establishment of a data reduction system, until her resignation from Ames in 2004. Joe Sacco now supports the SOFIA project.
2004-2005 Assisted Yvonne Pendleton's (Code SST) undergraduate students Ryan Nothhaft (San Jose State) and Kathy Kornei (senior at Yale U.) in support of ground-based and Spitzer observations of quiescent dust clouds. Assisted Kathy Kornei in the preparation, data acquisition and analysis of ground-based IRTF data.
Volunteer Education and Public Outreach (E/PO)
2004-present Presenter for Girl Scouts of Santa Clara County Tech Time Science Club for Girls
This series is a American Association of University Women (AAUW)-sponsored Monday-evening 2-hour workshop with hands-on activities for a group of 30-40 Santa Clara county Girl Scouts from grades 4,5, & 6. In 2004 I designed & led a workshop entitled Spectroscopy: Fingerprints of Light allowing the girls to build their first spectrometer out of a shoebox and a holographic grating and use it to learn about the colors of light. I designed and led a second workshop in 2005 on the nature of Infrared Light: More than Your Eyes Can See, where the girls participated in several activities using a thermal IR camera and liquid crystal thermal sensors. I also participated in a follow-up 30-minute interview for AAUW Connections (4/28/05), on KMVT15, which highlighted the latter presentation and emphasized the theme of women in science.
2001-2002 5th grade presenter, various schools CA & NJ with presentations on A Beginner's Guide to Infrared Astronomy, General Astronomy, and What It is Like to be a NASA Scientist.
2001 Space Camp California presenter on Playing with Cool Space Toys for Space Astronomy where I led a lecture and a cryogenic demonstration for Space Camp Grades 7&8 participants.
2001-2002 San Jose State Mentornet Program where I mentored two students at college level in engineering and science.
1996-1998 Presenter on CCDs, optical telescopes, and general astronomy topics for the National Science Week, Cambridge, UK, through Cambridge University and the Association of Women in Science and Engineering (AWISE).
